5 Lessons I Learned About Property On My Road Trip
Meeting some amazing women who have quit the 9 to 5 and become serious property developers, gave me some amazing insights about achieving success through property.
Women Are Making Property Their Business
So many women are creating lifestyle businesses in property. They are turning their leadership, organisational, and business skills into property as a business. I caught up with several of my friends who are doing some amazing projects – one is now doing her first subdivision with an investor partner, another is running an Airbnb service for clients, and another has sold her business and is going to be a full-time property investor. I’m seeing more and more when in property-related businesses – eg conveyancing, mortgage broking, town planning, and project management.
Studies are showing that the property and construction industry has less pay inequity for women than other industries.
Success in Property Investing Comes with Good Problem Solving Skills and Taking Risks
My property friends shared their incredible stories of some of their projects. They are proud to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. The truth is property investing has its risks and problems. But here lies the challenge which successful women love – they love solving problems and love taking risks (informed risks) to make a profit and create value in a property. They know they can count on the expertise of their team to help them understand issues and to produce solutions.
Women in Property Love Connection
Women who are succeeding in property are great communicators and love to build a community. They thrive working on property projects because of the people element – it’s the human element that is so critical to the success of a project. Women are great at investing in relationships, and this plays out in property projects where they create great teams.
My property ladies all commented that they thrive on the connection of other women in property to provide support and mutual understanding of the day to day challenges.
Women Want Financial Freedom and Independence
Women are ready to take the lead whether it’s investing their own money or clients. They aspire to financial freedom – being able to live life on their terms.
They value financial independence - meaning they don’t need to rely on anyone but themselves to meet their financial needs. They are able to have a roof over their head, food on the table, and clothes on their back. This was a common trait among both single and married women. They are happy to delay gratification if it means a better financial outcome. They are very conscious consumers – self-care is a priority but they are frugal with living expenses.
Women want to Retire Early and Have Good Things in Life with their Loved Ones
All the women I met aspire to retire early but with a lifestyle that allows them to enjoy what really matters with their close friends and family. No-one was interested in living on the pension and eating canned soup. While legacy, impact, minimalism, and sustainability are key values, these women want some luxuries and want to live in style. I could see they have a very clear vision of their dream life and how they are going to get there.
